Lycabettus Hill

row 1
Lycabettus Hill has taken its name by the popular belief that was once inhabited by wolves> it stands tall near the center of Athens in its all 278 meters height, so everyone can easily guess the magnificent view that this place has to offer.

During the ancient times, the hill was covered by lush vegetation and on the top the Athenians had built a temple dedicated to Zeus. After your walks in the streets of Athens, buying your souvenirs and gifts, just dedicate an afternoon [before the sun goes down] to hike along its narrow paths all the way to the top.

Taking Ploutarchou Street, once you reach the end, you will find yourselves in the foothills of Lycabettus. Should your physical strength allow you to, you can start climbing through the shrubs and small trees a path relatively easy at the beginning. Then, you will find some zigzagging stairs, laid out at a low angle in order to make the ascent easier but longer.

Once you reach the top, the panoramic city view will blow you away and you can rest as your eyes wandering up to Piraeus port at the far end of the horizon. There is also a terraced restaurant where you can enjoy the view, some cool refreshments and perhaps even a lunch.

Alternatively, in case this mini-trek is not amongst your top favorite activities, there is a cable car that reaches the top. You can take it from the corner of Aristippou and Ploutarchou Street and just walk your way down so that you don’t miss the amazing forest path.

Though during low tourist season you will find yourselves pretty much alone enjoying the view, during the summer there is the Lycabettus Theater that hosts a variety of concerts and performance of Greek and international artists.
